The term shin splints is a useless meaningless term and really should be left in the history books. The term really refers to pain in the leg, usually in runners. There are many different causes of leg pain in runners, which is why shin splints is such a bad term and should no longer be used. We need to be much more specific when talking about this condition: is it medial tibial stress syndrome? Is it compartment syndrome? Is it a stress fracture? Or is it, etc. None of these conditions are related, but they all get labeled in the lay press as shin splints which makes communicating to them difficult. The diagnosis of each one is different. The treatment of each one is different.

This is a call to anyone who can help with this issue. I’m a student pod and whilst on placement, a 17yo male presented with an uncompensated forefoot varus with tight posterior muscles (Gastroc, Calf & Hamstring) and an ankle equinus

Previously he had been prescribed orthotics that he liked and ended up growing out of. This orthotic seemed to be a custom midfoot device with minimum cast fill to contour the foot and enabling better pressure distribution. The orthotic also had an extrinsic medial post at the rearfoot. However, the orthotic quite worn and any other modifications may have been worn down.
